Athlete of the Week Q & A: Krysten Mayers

Each week, BRSN sits down for a Q & A session with the Athlete of the Week. This week, we caught up with junior Cornell field hockey forward, Krysten Mayers, following her hat trick, which included a double-overtime game-winner, in Saturday’s 3-2 victory over No. 13 Princeton.

BRSN: Krysten, thanks for taking the time to speak with us. You scored all three goals in Cornell’s 3-2 upset over the Princeton Tigers on Saturday.  Can you explain what your mindset was going into and during the game?

KM: Going into the game, my mindset was that if we wanted to win, we had to play aggressive and strong from the start. We could not wait to get frustrated and mad and let that fuel our fire. Instead, we had to hit the ground running from the start of the first whistle and keep our energy up. During the game, I felt this energy through my teammates and was very proud of our efforts and confidence.

BRSN: How long have you played field hockey?  How did you start?

KM: I have been playing field hockey for 12 years! When I was about eight years old, my sister and I asked our father if he could teach us the game because he played on the Barbados National Team, and he was also a coach at the time. He agreed to teach us and even started his own club team so that he could help us and other children learn the sport.

BRSN: Have you always been a forward?

KM: Before Cornell, I interchanged between being a forward and a center-midfielder with the latter being my most prominent position.

BRSN: What are you looking forward to the most for the Big Red as the season comes to a close?

KM: I am looking forward to our Dartmouth home senior game because I want the team to win so that our seniors are sent off on a good note. We love our seniors and want them to leave with good final memories and a successful game!

BRSN: What are some of your interests outside of field hockey?

KM: Outside of field hockey, I love to spend my time volunteering at hospitals and serving the underserved people in my community. Anytime I can, I try and surround myself with children because they are my passion, and I am pursuing a career as a specialized pediatrician. I also enjoy music, dancing, baking, and biking!

BRSN: What is one thing that most people don’t know about you?

KM: One thing that most people don’t know about me is that I hate chocolate.
