Nia Marshall
Sophomore Nia Marshall regained the top spot in Ivy League scoring after averaging 25.5 points per game on the weekend to lead the women’s basketball team in splitting contests against Dartmouth and Harvard.
Marshall earned Ivy League Player of the Week honors for the fourth time this season after her pair of remarkable performances. She shot almost 57 percent total from the field and 90 percent from the charity stripe.
Leading all scorers, Marshall registered 24 points in Friday night’s 66-46 dominant victory over the Big Green. She went 8-of-12 shooting from the floor and 8-of-9 from the free throw line and chipped in seven rebounds, two assists, and a steal in just 26 minutes of action.
Despite falling to the Crimson, 61-57, Marshall delivered another outstanding performance with her sixth double-double of the year on Saturday. She recorded just under half of the Big Red’s points, finishing with 27 on 9-of-18 shooting, while also adding 10 rebounds, four steals, and one assist.
Cornell moved to 14-8 overall and 5-3 in the Ivy League, which puts the team in a tie for third place with Yale in the conference standings. The Big Red will play host to the Bulldogs in a crucial game at 7 p.m. on Friday at Newman Arena.
Women’s Hockey Seniors
Even though the Big Red dropped a 3-2 loss to Dartmouth, the team’s three seniors shined in their final regular season home game at Lynah Rink, as the trio combined for all four of the team’s points.
Jillian Saulnier led the group on senior day, netting both goals for Cornell, while her line mates and fellow seniors, Brianne Jenner and Emily Fulton, each recorded an assist.
Saulnier scored her first goal to knot the game at one almost halfway through the first period. Saulnier pushed the puck along the boards and skated around a Big Green defender as she entered the zone. She then made a marvelous deke around the second defender before finishing on the top of the right circle with a wrist shot straight past Dartmouth goaltender Robyn Chemago.
The Big Red’s second goal came from Saulnier, once again, just about five minutes after the first on the power play, which gave Cornell a 2-1 lead. Fulton began the play from the right side of the blue line with a pass to Jenner, who was set up on the top left circle. Jenner received the puck and made a beautiful cross-crease pass to Saulnier, who ripped a one-timer into the goal.
The Big Red will conclude its regular season this weekend, as the team travels to RPI for a 7 p.m. faceoff on Friday and to Union for a 4 p.m. start on Saturday afternoon.
Jared Fiegl
Freshman Jared Fiegl scored the first goal of his collegiate career on Saturday, which proved to be the equalizer and helped the men’s hockey team claim a 3-3 tie at No. 14 Harvard.
Head coach Mike Schafer threw out his fourth line of Fiegl, senior Madison Dias, and junior Teemu Tiitinen, as the Big Red trailed by one goal late in the third period. Fiegl, an unlikely hero, found the perfect time to net his first goal at Cornell with three minutes and 59 seconds remaining in the contest.
Senior Joakim Ryan began the rush with a pass to Tiitinen, who broke up the right side of the ice and drove into the zone. Tiitinen fired a shot low, at the far pipe, but Crimson goaltender Steve Michalek made a kick save, as the puck bounced off his pad into the slot. Fiegl was in the right place at the right time to finish the juicy rebound over Michalek’s blocker.
After salvaging a draw and falling to Dartmouth the night before, the Big Red move into sixth place in the ECAC with only four regular season games remaining on the schedule.
The team will return to action this weekend, as Cornell takes on RPI at 7 p.m. on Friday for Pink at the Rink night. Senior night will take place the following evening when the Big Red hosts Union at 7 p.m. at Lynah Rink. The senior ceremony will occur after the game, as the squad honors the collegiate careers of Cole Bardreau, Dias, Joel Lowry, Jacob MacDonald, John McCarron, and Ryan.
