Weekend Preview: Ice Hockey

This week we enter ECAC playoffs on the women’s side and round out the regular season on the men’s side:

The women’s team will begin and complete the quarterfinals this weekend against Colgate. Ranked #7, the Big Red have home ice at Lynah, which will certainly be helpful.

Friday’s matchup will be a blowout, with Cornell beating Colgate 4-1. However, Game 2 on Sunday will be more closely contested, with a final score of 2-1 in favor of Colgate. In the culmination of the series on Sunday, senior Hanna Bunton will push the Big Red past the Raiders for a final score of 4-2, sending Cornell to the next round of the playoffs.

The men’s team will round out the regular season at Lynah Rink against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Friday and Union College on Saturday. Although the Big Red have already secured a first-round bye, they are in contention for the Cleary Cup, so Cornell still has something to fight for.

The game against RPI, ranked #57, will be easy work for Cornell (#9), as they will stroll to a 3-0 victory. On Saturday though, #7 Union will be a formidable opponent. The game will go into overtime and after a fast-paced overtime, the glove of Mitch Gillam will prove essential as Cornell earns a 3-2 victory.
